There's an article by Danny Siegel entitled "Bar/Bat Mitzvah Heroes" which appeared in the Winter, 1992 edition of Reform Judaism, which gives some suggestions. I found this while net-surfing on the World Wide Web. You can obtain a copy by ftp: ftp://nysernet.org/israel/places/boston/bakol/bar-bat/heroes Mark Frydenberg
Date: Tue, 21 Jun 1994 22:12:12 -0700 From: rdb5@cornell.edu (Robin Diane Biderman) Subject: Re: Lack/Loss of Faith I have a couple of suggestions. First, I come from a Congregation in NYC called Rodeph Sholom on the West Side. I know that our religious school director has been working with other directors through out the city to encourage kids to stay in Hebrew School. Because I believe as do many others that lack/loss of faith starts at a young age. So my first suggestion is that you contact a large urban Jewish community and see how they are combatting lack/loss of faith. Usually places in large urban area's also have adult classes on loss of faith at synagogues or YMHA or whatever sponsor's Jewish events. Second, in terms of more rural congregations, get a list from the UAHC of some of the more rural congregations which they have good contact with. Use this list to find congregations in rural areas which will be helpful. You might also try reading back issues of Liberal Judaism in which we have been discussing this issue of Jews in a rural area for the past couple of issues. Hope i have been helpful! Fee Negotiable. The Ramah camps are JTS sponsored, so are a mostly Hebrew environment, so they need a songleader comfortable in that situation. If you, or someone you know might be a candidate: Contact Alan Katzoff at (413) 283-9771. Please mention that you heard about this from me. B'Shalom Adrian A. Durlester
Date: Wed, 22 Jun 1994 18:21:04 -0700 From: Madeline F August <maugust@world.std.com> Subject: Synagogue dues structure Our family of four is currently a member of a synagogue in eastern Massachusetts where we are asked to pay a membership fee on an annual basis of approximately $1,000. There is a full time rabbi and approximately 215 families. I am 37 years old. My belief is that the existing dues structure should be changed to reflect one's ability to pay or otherwise recognize the differences between generations in their ability to make a financial contribution. I am interested in hearing what has worked or not worked at your synagogue and your thoughts on this obviously sensitive issue. Thanks for your help. maugust@world.std.com

Halacha Yomis (or Yomit, depending upon prononciation) refers to "Daily Jewish Law," or more specifically to a cycle developed for studying the basics of Jewish Law over a six- to seven- year period, in small daily installments. For those who know & care: each daily installment represents 3 seifim, or paragraphs, of the Shulchan Aruch Orach Chayim with Mishna Brura - the standard Code of Jewish Law with the commentary of Rabbi Y. Kagan. The writers contributing to this list will change daily, according to a weekly rotation. Additional contributors are sought for particular days of the week, either weekly or bi-monthly - please inquire to this address or to WorldCon@israel.nysernet.org. The purpose of this electronic journal is to offer participants hands-on experience in computation, telecommunications, information-gathering and information-selection, as well as practice in the English language and working in groups. Likewise, by reporting on subjects involving, or close to, the Jewish communities in Brazil, we are improving our knowledge of the world around us and strengthening our Jewish identities. We see our public as being principally those outside of Brazil who are interested in Jewish affairs and the Brazilian scene. Meida Link.br is a free publication released every other week. It contains articles, book reviews, economic indicators, and other information related to the Jewish Community in Brazil. Just for you to get the idea, here are the present issue's headlines: * Hitler Absolved - on the trial Hitler has been submitted to in Brazil * Brazil Prepares for General Elections - A brief description on the elections that will take place in Brazil. Part II will relate the candidates and the Jewish Community. * Sao Paulo Will Be Pilot Site of The Zionist Organization Projects * World Cup Favors Formation of Feminine Soccer Teams * Autos-de-Fe as Mass Spectacles - on a Masters Thesis on the Inquisition For subscribing please send a short note to clamsp@fpsp.fapesp.br.
