From: Michael Horowitz <michaelh1@hotmail.com> Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 13:02:56 -0000 Subject: "The Conservative Lie" > However, as righteously as we might defend our profound beliefs -- or > prejudices -- the use of epithet such as "lie" is unfortunate. We are told > that this was an editorial change made by the editors of that newspaper, in > which case the onus belongs to MOMENT with all its disgraceful implications > but, Rav Shaffran cannot entirely disassociate himself from it. Rabbi Shaffran did not choose the title. The Jewish editors of Moment chose it. Why would someone blame an Orthodox Jewish writer for a headline given to his article by a non Orthodox Jewish editor. This brings another question. Why would an editor changes a non controversial headline to one using a epiteth that they know will cause sinat chinam. The answer is simple. The goal of changing the headline was to cause people to hate the writer for being an Orthodox Jew. It was to give the reader the impression that Orthodox Jews hate non Orthodox Jews, and therefy justify the readers decision to ignore the substantive points of the article in favor of an emotional reaction against Orthodox Jews. If the reader demonizes the writer before reading the column, their is no chance the ideas expressed in the column will influence him. Earlier there was a dispute in Moment over a claim by Rabbi Shafran that the media, Moment included, is biased against Orthdox Judaism. This change in the headline of of Rabbi Shafran's column is a great example of this bias against Orthodox Jews in the liberal Jewish world.
From: Awaskow@aol.com Date: Sun Feb 11 20:45:18 US/Pacific 2001 Subject: Re: Tu B'Shvat ACTION: Olive Trees for Peace Shoshana Boublil writes: > while jewish kids are being targeted from behind olive groves, I haven't > heard Rabbi Waskow talk about supporting these kids. 1) Why are these Jewish kids anywhere within rifle shot of Palestinian villages? --- Because they are "defending" Israeli settlers. And why are the settlers there? NOT because those settlements are necessary to Israel's security, or even beneficial to it. Support our Jewish kids; bring them home to Israel now! Every atom of my work for peace shouts out this "talk about supporting these kids." It is those who insist on preserving these settlements and cite ancient wineries as "proof" of their "Jewishness" who are condemning Jewish kids to death. AGAIN: Support our Jewish kids; bring them home to Israel now! 2) The statement that we intend to publish in the NYTimes, and for which we seek support, includes a passage urging the Palestinians to substitute nonviolent protest for violence. Look at the Shalom Center Website at www.shalomctr.org in "URGENT -- Olive Trees for Peace" section to read & support the statement. 3) As to who owns the land: While we were in Jerusalem three weeks ago, we had lunch with an old friend, a Rabbi, a graduate of the Reconstr Rabb Coll. He described having Shabbat dinner with an old friend of HIS who had been a Mount Airy (Philadelphia) liberal Jew who had moved to Israel, become more and more frum, and has settled in a West Bank settlement. During dinner she mentioned with pride and excitement that the settlement had just been expanded. "How did you do that?" he asked. "Tuesday night we just went out with a bulldozer and moved the fence 100 yards. Now there's room for 100 more people here!" --- "Whose land was it that was outside the fence?" -- "Nobody's land." He went out on Shabbat morning to see the new section of the settlement. Still visible, though partly plowed under by bulldozer, were rows of growing lettuce, terraces of retaining walls made of painstakingly gathered stones. Nobody's land. Shalom, Arthur
