There, in a totally strange land, they attend the village school, begin to learn the language, meet Jewish children from Dublin (neutral in the war) and a local evacuee, and, gradually, despite homesickness and fear about the war and the fate of their families left behind under the Nazis, they gradually learn to make a new life. The story ends on a note of hope.]
