Playtime: Can I let my kid play in the sandbox on Shabbat?

For traditional Jews, there are some aspects of sandbox play that cross into traditionally prohibited activities for Shabbat, such as straining, constructing, or digging. Although young children need not be prevented from engaging in these activities, parents should not encourage them to do it. As the child gets older, they can be taught about the prohibited activities.
