Question 12.46:
In the case of a fire or other emergency, who should save the Torah from the synagogue?

Answer:

The first question is whether anyone should. It depends on the emergency, whether there is risk to life, and whether the risk to life is justified. Life outweighs nearly every mitzvah. The person who should rescue the Torah is therefore the person with the greatest chance of success. The question is pragmatic, not one of giving formal precedence.

The FAQ is a collection of documents that is an attempt to answer questions that are continually asked on the soc.culture.jewish family of newsgroups. It was written by cooperating laypeople from the various Judaic movements. You should not make any assumption as to accuracy and/or authoritativeness of the answers provided herein. In all cases, it is always best to consult a competent authority--your local rabbi is a good place to start.
