Question 8.3:
What is the Reform view of the role of women in Judaism?

Answer:

Reform believes in the equality of men and women, and, where necessary, has introduced alternative mitzvot and rituals to address religious needs in this fashion. Reform allows women to be both rabbis and cantors, counts them as part of the minyon (quorum for public prayer), allows women to initiate a divorce, and provides a berit-equivalent ceremony for girls (no medical procedure is done, however).

The FAQ is a collection of documents that is an attempt to answer questions that are continually asked on the soc.culture.jewish family of newsgroups. It was written by cooperating laypeople from the various Judaic movements. You should not make any assumption as to accuracy and/or authoritativeness of the answers provided herein. In all cases, it is always best to consult a competent authority--your local rabbi is a good place to start.
